Gold, frankincense and myrrh

Gold

We all know the story of how the 3 wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus. And both frankincense and myrrh are used as incense in churches and other religious temples and holy places around the world.

In our Yogandha selection of oil blends, you can find the essential oils of both frankincense and myrrh in our Yogandha Ground Rollerball. And frankincense is also part of the Yogandha Relax Multi-Purpose Oil.

Why do we love these aromas so much?

Both frankincense and myrrh essential oils have been extracted from the resin. And it’s the resin that is used in charcoal burners in, say, a Catholic church or for spiritual energetic cleansing.

Myrrh magic

It is thought that myrrh has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine for more than 3700 years. We know it’s been employed in ancient Egypt for embalming, in perfumes and for cosmetics. Even today myrrh has a reputation for healing mouth ulcers and gingivitis as it did in folklore medicine.

Myrrh is thought to completely relax the mind and dissolve negative feelings.

As an essential oil, we always create a blend in a base oil or other solvent. At Yogandha we love oils and creating synergetic blends with purpose and intention and this is why you find myrrh in our Yogandha Ground Rollerball.

It also blends perfectly with frankincense.

Fragrant frankincense

Frankincense was another favourite in ancient Egypt. And like myrrh, it was also used for its rejuvenating qualities. Its essential oil and extracts are used in many skin care products today, so the ancient Egyptians knew what they were talking about.

This resin has been used across the world medicinally since ancient times. And still is: Extracts from frankincense are currently being researched for their medicinal properties in skin inflammation and tumours.

The essential oil has a beautiful calming aroma. You automatically start to deepen and lengthen the breath as you inhale the fragrant grounding frankincense essential oil. This is why it is part of the blends in Yogandha Relax Multi-Purpose Oil to completely relax you and in Yogandha Ground Rollerball as a grounding and calming agent.

Frankincense has long been associated with the respiratory system especially if suffering from catarrh, coughs or bronchitis. Even to support your immune system against colds and the flu. As already mentioned this is an oil used for rejuvenating the skin especially dry and mature completion.

Golden properties of frankincense and myrrh

Yogandha loves both these oils for the properties they have on the skin where we apply them using either Yogandha Ground Rollerball or Yogandha Relax Multi-Purpose Oil. But the immediate impression inhaling frankincense or myrrh is of calm, relaxation and a meditative state of being. The slowing down of the breath calms us straight away. Perhaps this is one of the reasons it is used in religious and spiritual services. A way for our busy minds to calm down so we can contemplate, meditate, pray and be present.

Maybe this year the presence/present for you and your loved ones will also be of the healing benefits of frankincense and myrrh...
